Early Monday we caught a flight from STL to San Diego to begin our Faraway Feat; hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. We were picked up by the fully dedicated crew at Scout and Frodo’s. They housed, fed and transported 39 hikers the one evening we were there.
Since we were a couple they put us up in a camper in their driveway- while everyone else slept in large tents in their back yard. It was a great setup! I would encourage any out of towner to stay with them. Although they fill up fast, so check with them ahead of time.
We had dinner day zero, and early breakfast with the group the morning of day 1. There were two very important details that they made us aware of: 1. Breakfast is at 5:30am, 2. Put your pack on the deck by 5:30am.
We were up at 4:45 to pack up, and then done and done. Time to eat!
After breakfast we loaded the cars at 5:50am, and we were off. Every pack was off the deck, so we were all ready to go.
Joe and I were the only hikers not assigned to a car. So that meant we were riding with Jerry. Jerry is a Scoutmaster, and volunteers his time to transport hikers every Tuesday morning!
About 20 minutes into the hour drive we get a call, “hi Jerry, can you turn around? A hikers been left behind.”
Joe and I were both surprised and embarrassed for our fellow hiker. I gave Joe the look ‘How did that happen?’
The weather on Tuesday at Campo CA was high of 52, rainy and some high wind gusts. It had been in the upper 60’s on Monday and Wednesday it was supposed to climb into the 70’s. I felt as though we had terrible weather luck- but it ended up being the complete opposite. Although the forecast was just about spot on, it was definitely ideal for our first day. We never got to hot, sunburnt, and pictures weren’t blurred from the sun.
We did 11.4 miles our first day! And we felt great! We met two cool hikers, Alex and Tyler, leap frogged with a couple Germans, and had an amazing view of sunrise.
