The day started in our Big Bear hotel room. We woke at 5:50am, went to breakfast at The Teddy Bear diner at 6am - they have a hiker special for $6; two eggs, hashbrowns, bacon and toast! The best deal on trail yet.
After we ate we came back to the room to pack our bags- my best friend's husband joined us today on the PCT! Adam drove nearly 6 hours from Prescott AZ to spend the day with us. Adam arrived and drove us to the trail head nine miles outside of town- at mile 266. We began our hike at 9:30am today, later than normal but its what we expected after a town day. Our hike was a nice change of pace as its different and entertaining to hike with someone new. Just having someone extra passed the time quickly as we exchanged stories on many topics.
Adam even brought us pizza that we packed out for lunch, and so much candy!
The hiking was easy today as our bodies were rested and the trail was soft from recent rain and flat or slightly downhill for much of the day. The threat of rain held off almost all day and we were blanketed with a thick layer of fog. The temperature remained in the low fifties and made the day a breeze. We hiked 19+ miles today, the last two the clouds finally opened and it rained on us.
For the first time in almost a month, we got really wet. As we agreed on our camp sites, the rain let up! We quickly set up camp, then did something Joe and I have yet to do on trail: we cooked a hot meal outside the tent, swapping stories between the 3 of us. Even though it was a wet chilly evening, sitting around the stove on our sit pads with another hiker, was really appreciated!
(Our end of hike routine is set the tent up, lay out our sleeping pads, bags, and pillows, then change into base layers, cook and then eat in bed. Which usually leads to us falling asleep straight away with full bellies.)
Having a friend join us was truly awesome, and uplifting. Hearing that we have followers and supporters cheering us from afar is motivating. That friends and family are watching us on the Garmin and taking serious interest, keeps us on track (so to speak). :)
