We were both up at 5am, it was still dead dark in our corner of the deep forest crevice that we camped in. I at least felt protected- if something were to get us (bear) the only way would be from the front. As I was getting ready I saw a hiker with his headlamp pass us by. Wow, they were up at a crazy hour, as there weren’t campsites in the last few miles.
The hike was uphill for a majority, mainly long switchbacks, nothing too steep. About 7 miles in I got my first glance at Mt Shasta- Joe missed it though- so I rubbed it in his face, ‘you didn’t see her?! You missed the window (through the trees)?!’
We rounded another switchback and there she was in all her snow peaked glory, gleaming with everything she got.
We had a big day but it ended on the downhill.
When we got down to the road that we were going to hitch from, Soda Creek Road, the 2nd car we stuck our thumb out to pulled over and offered us a ride. It was a college girl from LA, Rebecca, who was in town to hike. What an angel.
We arrived in Mt Shasta around 2:30, got a room at the Alpine Lodge and spent the day resupplying and working on our blog. We did find time to visit the local pizza restaurant- we ate the whole thing in one sitting!
Overall we both really enjoyed Mt Shasta. The town was bigger than we expected, and the view of the Mountain was breathtaking from every street corner. The people were chill and the mountain draws a lot of tourists- those on adventures whether spiritual or mountaineering.
If you’re curious about the myth of Mt Shasta look into it- the locals believe in the Lemurians!
