Since we were hoping to be back on trail yesterday, Joe made me promise I’d be willing to wake up early and get a hitch back up the mountain. I obliged. 6am we’re both packed and ready for a ride. The only problem is it’s Saturday, in the sleepy town of Etna. No cars pass for a good 10 minutes, so we both decide to ride bikes across town to get a hot cup of coffee and there we would eat our own oatmeal breakfast.
Well the coffee shop isn’t open until 8, only the diner is open. So we go to the dinner and get coffee. Joe orders a slice of apple pie.
We leave the diner and eat our oatmeal outside.
Ride our bikes back to Hiker Hut- by now a handful of hikers are up. None can get a hitch.
Firekeeper, Joe and I decide maybe we could find a ride if we stand “downtown”. We walk the 4 blocks to the main drag- no cars.
By now the bakery is open so we pop in get a cup of Joe while we wait, but chocolate cookies just came out of the oven, Joe orders a cookie.
Then while we’re sitting in the bakery the baker brings out yesterday’s lemon and olive oil cake!
So far this morning we’ve had: pie, oatmeal, chocolate cookies and cake.
We’re so hyped for the trail.
Finally by 8am we get a hitch!
We’re back on trail by 8:40am, I wore the wrong insoles so my feet were killing me all day. I’ll have to switch back to my old ones.
The 20 miles that we did felt more like 50.
We saw everything today- alpine lakes, waterfalls, snow fields, switchbacks, views of Mt Shasta, it was a visually fulfilling (long) day.
