Due to having company and cell service we didn’t break camp very early, which in turn means we may not meet our 10x10 goal, or our lunch goal of 15 miles, leaving us hiking well past dinner.
But today we moved with motivation- we hustled determines to get our 10 miles. We got 9.7, and by lunch we got 16, we had our eyes set on the water cache there.
The mosquitos were pretty bad at times, so at lunch we set the tent up for a private bug free lunch and a siesta after.
Just as we were about leave our lunch spot 1.5 hours later, Gord and his sons arrived, we ended up hanging back a bit longer to chat and have a cup of coffee.
There’s been talk on the trail of an alternate at the water cache- news of massive snow fields that could be dangerous up ahead. Gord and his sons were planning on taking a 8 mile alternate side trail to side step the snow.
Since it’s July, Joe and I agree the snow must be mostly melted by now- and not a threat. It’s only at 7,000’ anyway. We were going to take our chances.
We say goodbye and head out- 11 more miles for us.
The hike after lunch was very scenic- green moss on every tree, the sunlight shining into the forest seemed to be a green light, there were some ridges that offered views of Lake Summit and snow peaks in the distance- Sisters? Mt Bachelor?
The mosquitos have significantly gotten worse, to the point where I’m stressed and want to cry with disgust. Nothing seems to keep them away- we stop and spray ourselves with feet several times, wishing each one a death sentence.
We finally race into camp lake side to Summit Lake- it’s a gorgeous lake with a Island in the middle. It’s so peaceful, or that it would be if the mozzies would disappear. We set up camp and are bitten a hundred times, we dash into the tent and bring handfuls of bloodsuckers in with us. We spend the next 5 minutes smashing them in mid air. We must kill every single one, or they will eat you in your sleep.
