We saw lots of South bounders on today’s 26 miles, and also lots of Huckle and blueberries! Lunch was enjoyed at Wahtum lake – I wish we could have swam. We hiked mostly down but had some up hill too- and some through badly burned areas. The Trail was super dusty all day.
At one point we were offered incredible views of what’s to come for us- we were high on a ridge, in the distance we could see Mt Adams, Mt Rainier and Mt St Helen’s! The trifecta! We were told this view can only be seen once more on the trail, we stood there taking the scenery in before hiking down and not seeing the peaks for the rest of the day.
We saw a man on his horse with a supply horse in tow. I have no idea how those horses made it up on this trail. I worried about him and them for the rest of the day. We camped four miles short of town. The trail was awful going down so I’m happy we stayed up there. The site provided an overlook of town and the Columbia gorge. So pretty!
